WASHINGTON - It's not just what you don't do at work that can get you fired -- some of the things you might think are acceptable actually aren't.

Monster.com, with the help of a New York-based recruiter, is out with a list of the top 10 things that can get you fired.

Topping the list is fibbing on your resume or application. Bottom line: Don't make up your credentials. It could come back to bite you in the you-know-what.

While it seems pretty self-explanatory that you should not lie, some of the other behaviors on Monster's list may not jump out at as offenses for which you can get the boot. Among them: gossiping, surfing the Web too much and alienating your co-workers.

When it comes to gossip, everybody obviously talks at work, but also remember that everybody hears what you say. So don't gossip.

As for spending your time on the Web, if you're in cyberspace and it's not work-related, you're not really present at work. And -- duh -- looking at pornography or adult content in your office is something that can easily get you the ax.

Alienating others is something you may not realize you do. Not cooperating and spreading good will could result in your getting replaced.

Here's Monster's list:

  1. Lying on your resume or application;
  2. Job-hunting while on the company dime;
  3. Gossiping;
  4. Spending too much time on personal phone calls;
  5. Boozing on the job;
  6. Too much Web surfing;
  7. Hopping in the sack with the boss;
  8. Being careless with numbers;
  9. Alienating your co-workers;
  10. Not accepting responsibility, aka pointing the finger at someone else.
