Corporate earnings season got off to a good start Wednesday, helping lift the stock market after two days of declines. The market opened higher and remained modestly higher throughout the day. Stocks added to their gains after the Federal Reserve released minutes from its latest policy meeting in June. Alcoa was the biggest gainer among major stocks, helped by its surprisingly strong earnings report.
On Wednesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 78.99 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 16,985.61.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 9.12 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,972.83.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 27.57 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,419.03.
For the week:
The Dow is down 82.65 points, or 0.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 12.61 points, or 0.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 66.89 points, or 1.5 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 408.95 points, or 2.5 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 124.47 points, or 6.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 242.44 points, or 5.8 percent.
