WASHINGTON — Veterans Day weekend is a time to reflect and thank those who have served this country. It is also a time to get outside and enjoy the last few weeks of fall before winter comes and turns everything icy white.

In keeping with the spirit of Veterans Day, the National Mall is hosting several free events throughout the weekend. Highlights include a presentation on the American Indians Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The walking tour will explore the “hidden connections” between the monuments and the struggle for freedom. For the early birds, check out a running tour of the waterfront and the history of development in the area. Runners should meet at the Washington Monument Lodge Sunday at 8 a.m. Check out the National Park Service for a full list of events.

Film and history buffs alike will appreciate Mount Vernon Estate’s “National Treasure Tour”. Based on the “National Treasure” movie franchise featuring Nicolas Cage, the tour goes behind the scenes to actual filming locations from George Washington’s time. Explore underground cellars and learn the truth behind our nation’s founding. Or will you? Tours are available both Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 in addition to admission into the estate.

The ever-expanding world of D.C. art is about to get even bigger with the Saturday debut of a new gallery in Northwest. Arts@1830 will host everything from sculpture to film in its chic space just above Bar Pilar. The opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is free to the public. Call the gallery for more information at 202-234-2550.

Whip out your tweed and prepare for this weekend’s most fashionable event. Brought to you by the Dandies & Quaintrelles behind the Seersucker Social, the third annual Tweed Ride is back on Sunday. Pedal through historic D.C. from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. decked out in your vintage best. Then, step into Smith Commons on H Street for an after-party complete with live music, gourmet snacks and period-inspired cocktails. The party costs $15 per person, but the ride is free. Register online for the bike route.
