WASHINGTON – A Montgomery County high school student was arrested Thursday and charged as an adult for bringing an unloaded handgun onto school property.
Montgomery County Police say that the 17-year-old boy, of Derwood, was seen on the grounds of Magruder High School, in Rockville, just before 8 a.m. The boy was not supposed to be on school property and a school resources officer told the boy to leave.
When the student refused, he was arrested for trespassing. The officer searched the boy’s backpack and found an unloaded, .22-caliber gun inside. No ammunition was recovered with the weapon, police say.
Police described the gun as “an older firearm” and were examining the weapon to determine whether it works.
The teen was charged as an adult with misdemeanor possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. possession of a firearm by a minor and disorderly conduct.
Schools spokesman Dana Tofig says the student was not supposed to be at school because he was suspended. However Tofig says the school cannot release why the teen was suspended.
