Man gets 6 years in plot to burn house

BALTIMORE (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to plotting with his boss to burn down the boss’ house for insurance has been sentenced to more than six years in prison.

Sixty-year-old Hassan Hammoud of Dundalk was also ordered to pay more than $800,000 in restitution at sentencing Friday in federal court in Baltimore.

According to his plea agreement, Hammoud and 49-year-old Saleh Fakhoury plotted to destroy Fakhoury’s Lutherville house. Prosecutors say Fakhoury was deeply in debt and wanted the insurance proceeds to pay off creditors.

Fakhoury’s house was destroyed in a fire on March 14, 2009.

Fakhoury, who pleaded guilty to his role in the conspiracy, will be sentenced on Jan. 7.
