BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s mayor and police commissioner have asked the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the department after use of force cases that over the past several years have resulted in millions of dollars in legal settlements.
Commissioner Anthony W. Batts announced at a news conference Friday that he wanted an investigation into the department. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in an emailed statement that she welcomed any partners willing to work in efforts against excessive force complaints.
Councilman Bernard Young sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday asking the Justice Department to investigate the department.
