2 charged in shooting of woman in Maryland

WHEATON, Md. (AP) — Montgomery County police have charged two people, including a 13-year-old boy, with shooting a woman in what investigators believe was gang-related retaliation.

Police say 19-year-old Eber Umanzor of Kensington has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and other offenses. The 13-year-old was charged as a juvenile. Both were arrested on Wednesday.

Investigators say Umanzor and the boy believed an 18-year-old woman had given police information about gang activity and plotted to shoot her.

Police say the woman was walking in Wheaton early Wednesday when the boy, who had hidden in bushes, shot her in the back with a handgun.

Officers say the boy shot the woman several more times after she fell, then fled in a car driven by Umanzor.

The woman was treated and released at a hospital.
