6 injured in natural gas explosion in Danville

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — An explosion at an apartment building in Danville has sent six people to the hospital.

The Danville Fire Department says the explosion occurred after a vehicle ran off the road early Saturday morning and hit the 18-unit Royal Terrace Apartments. The vehicle severed natural gas lines and the resulting leak filled the building with gas.

The fire department says firefighters were evacuating the building and searching for residents when the explosion occurred. Six residents suffered non-life threatening injuries. Fourteen others were displaced.

The fire department says the explosion buckled walls and floors. It also sparked a fire that caused significant damage to the building.

The fire marshal’s office and police are investigating.
