Woman’s death investigated as homicide in Spotsylvania

WASHINGTON — A woman was found dead in a Spotsylvania County home Sunday after she didn’t show up for work.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says investigators are treating her death as a homicide.

Nancy Mercer, 58, had not reported to work at MedsStar Washington Hospital in Northern Virginia when her employer contacted the sheriff’s office Sunday night.

Deputies were asked to check on her welfare at a home in the 7800 block of Eastridge Way. There, officers discovered Mercer’s remains lying on the floor.

Mercer’s body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for an autopsy.

Authorities are withholding further information until the autopsy results are completed.

Detectives are following up on leads developed at the scene, although no suspects have been identified, according to the sheriff’s office.
