WASHINGTON — The cost of living in the D.C. area is expensive, but most people who live here already know that.
However, new data shows not only is it pricey – D.C. proper was the most expensive in the country in 2012 when compared to the 50 states. Washington-Arlington- Alexandria also ranks in the top when compared with metro areas.
The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis measured how much goods and services cost in different geographical regions relative to the national average.
Coming in at number two among states is Hawaii followed by New York and New Jersey. The study looks at real personal income and how far a person’s salary goes.
However, the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area comes in seventh compared to other metro areas, points out DCist.
Among metro areas, Urban Honolulu, New York-Newark-Jersey City, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Santa Cruz-Watsonville and San Francisco-Oakland- Hayward were all ranked as more expensive than D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria.
