How to haggle for a discount this holiday season

WASHINGTON – This holiday season, more and more stores are ready to give shoppers a discount — all they have to do is ask for it.

It’s easy to walk into a store, find an item you like and then use your smartphone to see if you can buy it cheaper online.

Brick-and-mortar stores know customers do it, so more of them are now willing to match or even undercut those cheaper prices, the New York Times reports.

Not all stores with price matching policies advertise these policies, and some that do specialize in high end retail like Nordstrom.

Some businesses are even training workers on how to handle hagglers.

Instead of a discount, employees at some stores are told to offer haggling customers a bonus like free shipping or an extended warranty.

The keys to getting these discounts: The consumer has to ask for them, and ask nicely.
