WASHINGTON — Anne Gray Haynes returned home from volunteer work on Veterans Day to find a crime scene at her home and her husband, D.C. transportation planner Ronald Kirby, dead.
“He was snatched from all of us, all of us who care about him,” Haynes says while sitting inside her and Kirby’s Alexandria home.
Kirby, 69, was shot multiple times Monday, Nov. 11, Alexandria police say. His son found him near the entryway of the home just after 12:30 p.m. There were no signs of a break in.
Kirby’s was the fifth homicide in Alexandria in 2013. Police say they have no leads.
“It’s not a crime that fits a pattern for that neighborhood or for Alexandria and we have to give that thought that this could be an isolated incident, and may have to deal with who the victim was,” says Crystal Nosal, Alexandria police public information officer.
Neighbors say investigators have been canvassing the neighborhood and police refer to this as an active investigation.
Haynes thinks it was a robbery and the thief did not expect to find anyone home.
But finding out who killed her husband does not dominate Haynes’ thoughts
“It won’t make sense even when they find out what happened. That somebody would shoot that gun doesn’t make sense,” Haynes says. “What really is the hardest is that he’s not here and I have to do a whole different life. And I’m not going to live the way I thought. We were going to grow old together in this house. And I just can’t live without him.”
