WASHINGTON - Could Robert Griffin III be the next John Elway?

Washington Redskins' RGIII is pictured on the cover of the Sept. 2 issue of Sports Illustrated with a 80s-style Elway in the background. In the issue, it compares the Redskins' quarterback to the two-time Super Bowl champ and Denver Broncos alum.

Before RGIII's knee injury, he was known for his speed and arm strength. But SI says that just because RGIII excels at running, doesn't mean he couldn't become a "gunslinger" like Elway.

The magazine's NFL preview issue is a four-cover regional series that compares young quarterbacks RGIII, Andrew Luck, Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson to a past Super Bowl champion.

The Redskins have high hopes for the regular season and are looking to RGIII to lead the way after his recovery from a season-ending injury in the playoffs but could an SI cover be bad luck?

The Washington Nationals' Bryce Harper was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's baseball preview issue earlier this year, and was later injured when he twice ran into an outfield wall as the team aimed for better than "terrible."
