Westwood to play Wales Open ahead of Ryder Cup

NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — Instead of a month off before the Ryder Cup, Lee Westwood has decided to play the Wales Open.

Westwood was among three captain’s picks for the European team. He was eliminated from the FedEx Cup playoffs at The Barclays two weeks ago. Westwood would have had four weeks off going into the Ryder Cup on Sept. 26-28 at Gleneagles.

Westwood says he can’t remember the last time he was this excited to play a regular European Tour event. This will be only the fourth European Tour event he has played this year, not counting the majors or World Golf Championships.

He says the Wales Open at Celtic Manor has always been a consideration if he made the team and the perfect preparation for the Ryder Cup.
