Stocks mixed … Immigration a no-go in Congress this year … The $100,000 Yankee ticket

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are flickering between small gains and losses, keeping major indexes close to record levels as investors assessed the latest data on housing. The stock market is set to end June with its seventh straight quarterly gain. U.S. markets will close early on Thursday and remain closed Friday for the July 4th holiday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior White House official says House Speaker John Boehner has told President Barack Obama the House of Representatives won’t vote on an immigration overhaul this year. The official says Obama will take steps on his own to change immigration policies through executive actions, without congressional approval. Obama is expected to address the immigration issue in remarks later today.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is looking into how many women could be affected by the Supreme Court’s decision that allows some closely held businesses to opt out of providing the contraceptive coverage required under the new health care law. The court’s 5-4 decision means the Obama administration must find alternative ways of providing free contraception to women who are covered under objecting companies’ health insurance plans.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal appeals court in New Orleans says a former BP executive can be tried on a charge that he obstructed a Congressional investigation into the 2010 Gulf oil spill. The case involves allegations that David Rainey failed to disclose information from BP PLC indicating that the amount of oil gushing into the Gulf after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion could have been far higher than estimates that were being made publicly. The ruling reverses a lower court decision.

NEW YORK (AP) — A ticket stub signed by Lou Gehrig the day he retired from baseball is going on the auction block. Heritage Auctions says only two of the more than 60,000 tickets sold to the game at Yankee Stadium are known to have survived. And only one is signed by Gehrig. It’s estimated to bring over $100,000 at the Aug. 1 sale in Cleveland.
