Help your heart by reducing hangovers

Sunday - 11/3/2013, 9:40am  ET

WASHINGTON - If you wake up this morning with a hangover from too many drinks last night, your head probably feels the pain now - but your heart could feel it later. All it takes is one hangover a year to boost a man's risk of heart disease, according to a study by researchers in Finland.

The study, which tracked the health of more than 2,600 men for 15 years, also found that a hangover triples a man's risk for a stroke. Heavy boozing can also lead to hypertension and increase the risks for heart disease. But there's little harm in having a drink or two at a party.

The study's author tells Men's Health that men who drank more than twice a week, were overweight or who had hypertension were at an even greater risk. But she says her findings are not a one-size-fits-all scenario.
