Outdoor smoking ban takes effect at American University

Friday - 8/16/2013, 6:34am  ET

WASHINGTON - Cigarettes have been all but snuffed out on the American University campus in Northwest D.C.

The Washington Post reports smoking had been banned indoors and near building entrances for years at American. On Thursday, the ban took effect outdoors as well.

During a transitional period, smokers will be able to light up at three outdoor spots until Dec. 23. After that, they'll have to leave campus entirely to light up. The ban reportedly also covers cigars and chewing tobacco.

The Post says an estimated nearly 1,200 college campuses have gone smoke-free nationwide. Others in the D.C. area include the University of Maryland in College Park and The George Washington University.
