Lousy mood? Put on some happy music

WASHINGTON – It sounds simple enough — choosing to listen to happy music can make you happier.

Researchers from University of Missouri instructed two groups of participants to try to improve their moods by listening to music.

One group was given the upbeat “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland, while the other was told to listen to Igor Stravinsky’s somber classic, “The Rite of Spring.”

Two other groups were given the same songs, but not told to try to lift their own moods.

Two weeks later, only the group listening to the upbeat music while consciously trying to feel better actually did report a lighter mood.

Researchers say that shows actively seeking happiness is important in achieving it.

Yet, lead author Yuna Ferguson suggests not becoming focused on constantly wondering, “Am I happy yet?”
