MADRID (AP) — Spanish police say they have arrested a man who has confessed to stabbing five people in an hour in the northeastern city of Lleida.

A municipal police spokeswoman said the man, a 21-year-old Spaniard, admitted to the stabbings when police stopped him in the street Tuesday. The man was taken to a hospital for medical and psychiatric tests.

The five injured in the daylight attacks Monday were a Chinese person, a Moroccan, a Pakistani, a Spaniard and a person from an unspecified South American country. All remained hospitalized Wednesday. The aggressor left the knife stuck in the back of the last victim.

Police said he appeared to attack his victims at random.

The officer spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with force regulations.
