AMSTERDAM (AP) — The Netherlands has assigned a prosecutor to work in Kiev on the criminal investigation into the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.
Spokesman Wim de Bruin said Friday that with “dozens” of investigators working on the case in multiple countries, it was important to have a prosecutor in the country where the crash occurred to coordinate the probe.
Flight 17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, killing all 298 people aboard, mostly Dutch. The Netherlands has taken the lead in coordinating criminal investigations, which are also ongoing in Ukraine, Belgium, the Netherlands, Malaysia and Australia, to try to find those responsible and bring them to justice.
Australian and Dutch police are also in Ukraine. De Bruin said he couldn’t give further details.
