WASHINGTON - Virginia House Democrat Dave Englin will not run for re-election, following a scandal involving an extra-marital affair.
Englin made the announcement at an Alexandria City Democratic Committee meeting Monday evening.
"In my public role, I have worked hard to serve my constituents and to be an effective, progressive voice in Richmond," Englin said in a statement. "But in my personal life, I let down my family and was unfaithful in my marriage, so Shayna and I recently separated."
The couple married in 1996 and have one child.
The 45th House District that he represents include sections of Arlington, Fairfax and the City of Alexandria.
Englin has served in the General Assembly since 2006 and has recently been at the forefront on the fight against a bill that would have required invasive ultrasounds for pregnant women seeking abortions.
In January, Englin proposed a bill to make medical marijuana legal in the Commonwealth.
The bill never got a full vote.
