WASHINGTON — A man who accidently hit and killed a woman while driving a dump truck has been sentenced to jail time.
On February 24, Jennifer Lawson, 39, was hit by the truck around 11:30 a.m. in front of Nottingham Elementary School in Arlington as she was putting her two- year-old daughter in the rear seat of her minivan. The daughter was unharmed.
The driver, Marvin Valladares, has been sentenced to 10 days of jail time and a $100 fine.
Valladares spoke by way of an interpreter at the sentencing, and said he is devastated by Lawson’s death.
Valladares’ sister testified on his behalf and reiterated her brother’s despair as a result of his absent-mindedness.
The judge has suspended four of the jail days because of Valladares’ remorse, and because he stopped immediately to take responsibility for his actions.
