WASHINGTON — Three days of memorial services for former D.C. Mayor Marion
Barry began Thursday.
Barry’s casket arrived at the John A. Wilson Building, the
District of Columbia’s city hall, on Thursday morning. Following a brief
ceremony at 9 a.m., Barry’s remains will lie in repose. The public will be
able to come and express condolences for 24 hours.
A procession to the church Barry regularly attended begins at 10 a.m. Friday.
It will travel through all eight wards, but a specific route has not been made
public.
Then from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, a musical and video tribute is planned
to
celebrate Barry’s 40 years of public service. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. a
community
memorial service is planned at the Temple of Praise, 700 Southern Ave. SE.
An all-day celebration is planned for Saturday at the Washington Convention
Center in Halls C and D. Viewing hours will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the
memorial service to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m.
A private burial at Congressional Cemetery will immediately follow the
memorial service.
Barry served four terms as major before his death last month at age 78.
