WASHINGTON – A D.C. Public Schools bus driver for special-needs children has been charged with drunken driving.
Fritz Gerald Aubin, 55, is facing charges of driving under the influence and operating a vehicle while impaired.
According to ABC7, Aubin was arrested on Oct. 7 near a gas station on Ninth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast.
A station co-owner says Aubin’s bus was stalled in the street. He asked for and received a red gas can.
“He needed diesel fuel,” the co-owner told ABC7. “They can’t put diesel fuel in a red gas can, it’s gotta be a yellow can.”
The gas can reportedly raised the suspicion of nearby police, who administered a field sobriety test. According to officers, Aubin could not walk straight, stand on one leg or count out loud.
Police say that when they approached Aubin, his uniform was dirty and he was spilling gasoline “all over the pavement,” according to ABC7. Police also wrote in a sworn affadavit that Aubin seemed nervous.
He was arrested in front of children who were on the bus. ABC7 says Aubin has been placed on paid administrative leave.
