The WTOP Charity of the Month is
A Wider Circle
A Wider Circle’s mission is to end poverty. Their holistic approach integrates on-the-ground services for the creation of stable homes, workforce development, and neighborhood revitalization. A Wider Circle also seeks to develop large-scale solutions that incorporate greater awareness and engagement by the community.
A Wider Circle currently has three interrelated programs that seek to meet both urgent and long-term needs, working with individuals, families, and entire communities.
The Essential Support Program addresses the immediate needs of families by providing beds, furniture, and basic home goods to thousands of children and adults across the region who are leaving homelessness, fleeing domestic abuse, or otherwise living without the essentials.
A Wider Circle’s Workforce Development Program works intensively with individual job seekers through one-on-one coaching, peer workshops, and the provision of professional clothing. Finally, through the Neighborhood Partnerships Program, communities invite A Wider Circle to collaborate and develop a long-term presence and lasting, trusting partnerships.
Founded in 2001, A Wider Circle’s name was inspired by a 1950 letter from Albert Einstein to a grieving father that stated, “Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion.”
Since its founding, A Wider Circle has provided vital services to more than 270,000 children and adults. Each day, they also seek to change the conversation around poverty, ensuring that those with the greatest need are our greatest priority. A Wider Circle’s mission is truly a community-based effort with thousands of volunteers, in-kind donors, and local businesses engaged.
