May Charity of the Month

The WTOP Charity of the Month is
Horton’s Kids

Horton’s Kids empowers children living in one of Washington, DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate high school ready for success in college, career, and life.

We work in an Anacostia housing complex, known as Wellington Park, which is home to more than 500 children with big dreams and the potential needed to achieve them. Unfortunately, they face significant challenges that are beyond their control. The average income among families we serve is less than $10,000, the local public schools are chronically underperforming, and their neighborhood has one of DC’s highest rates of violent crime. Horton’s Kids’ wraparound, personalized supports even the playing field for children, enabling them to overcome these challenges and graduate from high school ready for lifelong success.

The main hub of Horton’s Kids is our Community Resource Center. Open six days a week and located just steps from children’s homes, the Center allows us to be a consistent and trusted extension of the families we serve. We believe that wraparound services are essential to empowering at-risk children to overcome the challenges in their environment and succeed in school and life. To that end, our research-based, data-driven programming combines rigorous academic supports with social-emotional development opportunities and health and basic needs services that work together to help children reach their full potential. Staff case managers personalize these supports for each child. This approach has led to tremendous outcomes: in fact, children who participate in Horton’s Kids are twice as likely to graduate from high school.
