Judge orders mental evaluation for abduction attempt suspect

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A judge in Virginia is ordering a woman accused of attempting to kidnap children at a Target store to undergo mental health evaluations.

The Virginian-Pilot reports 30-year-old Patricia Metz is charged with attempted abduction and assault after police say she tried to kidnap two children under the age of 5 at the store last week.

She’s been held without bond at the city jail since her arrest. Virginia Beach Sherriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hieatt says Metz was scheduled for arraignment Friday and Monday, but refused to cooperate and wouldn’t put on her jail uniform.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Judge Esther Wiggins ordered Metz to undergo evaluations to determine if she’s competent to stand trial and if she was sane at the time of the incident.
