Bennett, Corona power Wake Forest past George Mason to claim Winston-Salem Regional title

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Pierce Bennett drove in five runs, Danny Corona homered twice and five Wake Forest pitchers combined to allow just five base hits as the Demon Deacons rolled over George Mason, 15-1 Sunday night to win the Winston-Salem Regional championship and claim its berth in the super regionals.

George Mason used a Brett Stallings sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to eliminate Maryland, 11-10 in an elimination game earlier Sunday.

Josh Hartle gave up one run on three hits and three walks and recorded nine strikeouts over 4 ⅔ innings in the start for Wake Forest (49-10). Sean Sullivan came on to pitch three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven.

Corona hit a solo home run in the second and tagged a three-run shot in the third to give the Deacons a 9-0 lead.

Derek Wood singled to drive in George Mason’s only run in the fifth inning.

Logan Rumberg (4-2) started for George Mason and allowed three hits, walked three and gave up six earned runs in 2 ⅓ innings.
