Pittsburgh beats Notre Dame 9-5 behind 5 home runs

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Noah Martinez hit one of Pittsburgh’s five home runs — a three-run blast — to help the Panthers beat Notre Dame 9-5 on Wednesday in the ACC Tournament.

Pitt (24-30), the No. 12 seed, continues pool play on Thursday against the No. 1 team in the country and No. 1 seed in the tournament, Wake Forest. Eighth-seeded Notre Dame (30-23) faces the Demon Deacons on Friday.

Kyle Hess hit the Panthers’ third leadoff home run of the game in the seventh inning and Dom Popa followed with their fifth homer to make it 9-4.

Pitt broke a program record for most walks in a single season, passing the previously mark of 318 by the 2022 team. The Panthers’ defense also shinned with four double plays.

Carter Putz went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for Notre Dame. Vinny Martinez sent it to the gap for his first triple of the season before stealing home to tie it at 3-all in the third.
