A look at Day 2 from the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A brief look at Friday’s fourballs matches from the Presidents Cup:

THE SCORE: United States leads 8-2.

THE SESSION: The Americans won the fourballs session 4-1, with the International team failing to win a single match (two ties).

THE STAR: Max Homa, making his Presidents Cup debut, holed birdie putts from 12 feet on the 17th and 18th holes as he and Billy Horschel won, 1 up, over Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith in the final match.

MATCH OF THE DAY: A halve between Sungjae Im and Sebastian Munoz against Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns in which a birdie or eagle was recorded on 10 consecutive holes and the match featured 18 birdies and one eagle from the four players.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Justin Thomas hit 6-iron that rolled inches by the cup on the par-3 14th as he and Jordan Spieth took a 3-up lead and went on to win. In the PGA Championship in 2017, Thomas hit 7-iron to a front pin to 10 feet for a clinching birdie.

RECORD SETTER: Adam Scott broke a record held by Tiger Woods, only this isn’t anything to brag about. He lost for the 10th time in fourballs at the Presidents Cup. Woods had nine fourballs losses.

KEY STATISTIC: The Americans have trailed in eight of the 170 holes played over the first two days.

NOTEWORTHY: Of the five Americans who have won both matches, Max Homa is the only one to win with different partners (Tony Finau and Billy Horschel).

QUOTEWORTHY: “I wasn’t very good at math in school. I think there’s still 20 points available to win so we’re going to fight.” — International captain Trevor Immelman.

SATURDAY: Four matches in foursomes followed by four matches in fourballs.

TELEVISION: Saturday, 7-8 a.m. (Golf Channel), 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (NBC).
