On a per-share basis, the Camden, New Jersey-based company said it had net income of $1.94.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.90 per share.
The water utility posted revenue of $1.45 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.32 billion.
American Water Works shares have climbed 4.5% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $130.06, a decrease of 4% in the last 12 months.
