Wes Foster, co-founder of Long & Foster, dies

P. Wesley “Wes” Foster, one-half of an entrepreneurial duo who created one of the nation’s most recognizable names in residential real estate, died late Friday at age 89.

His cause of death wasn’t disclosed.

Foster famously partnered with Henry Long in 1968 to found their eponymous The Long & Foster Cos. after the two met when Long toured a home Foster was showing. They started off in a 600-square-foot office in Fairfax and one other employee, with Foster focusing on the residential real estate side of the business and Long, on the commercial side. Long, who died at age 83 in 2020, ultimately sold his stake in 1979 to Foster, who opted to keep the firm independent at the time. 

That changed in 2017, when Long & Foster sold to HomeServices of America, a Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK) affiliate, growing by then to be the country’s largest private independent brokerage by sales volume.
