Protocol, an arm of the Politico publishing empire, is shutting down

The widening tech downturn has claimed another victim, with San Francisco-based online tech-news outlet Protocol ceasing publication.

Protocol, an arm of the Politico publishing empire, will stop publishing Thursday and lay off its entire staff of about 60, CNN first reported. Employees were notified of the decision at an all-hands meeting Tuesday morning.

The company later posted a farewell on its website.

Protocol was started in 2020 by former Politico founder Robert Allbritton to track the ascendance of Silicon Valley as a cultural and political force, following a model Politico had forged in political news coverage. It was led by President Tammy Wincup, who was previously senior adviser at private equity firm TPG’s The Rise Fund. She joined that firm in 2018 from D.C. education technology company EverFi Inc., a portfolio company for The Rise Fund. She left Protocol in December 2021 and joined D.C.’s Revolution Foods in March.
