Metro CEO Paul Wiedefeld to retire

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s general manager and CEO, Paul Wiedefeld, notified the agency’s board on Tuesday of his plans to retire later this year.

Wiedefeld said he will retire in six months, after six years leading the regional transit agency, per a Metro announcement Tuesday afternoon.

“Forty-plus years in transportation teaches you that there is no set mile-marker for this decision, but given the seismic shifts happening in transit and the region, Metro needs a leader who can commit to several years of service and set a new course,” Wiedefeld said in a statement.

Metro’s board of directors will launch a national search for his replacement, and will further discuss plans to fill his position during its Feb. 10 meeting.

He has led Metro through a turbulent time, working to improve rail safety and reliability amid falling ridership, reports of track problems and, most recently, an investigation still underway by the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission…
