Sprouts, the latest grocer to expand to Greater Washington, opens in Herndon

The D.C. area’s grocery store options are growing yet again this week with the arrival of Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. (NASDAQ: SFM), a healthy- and organic-centric grocery chain out of Phoenix. 

The company’s first D.C.-area store is slated to open Wednesday at 494 Elden St. in Herndon. It is the first Sprouts in Greater Washington, though the chain has opened stores in Towson, Ellicott City and Bel Air outside of Baltimore. 

The Herndon Sprouts is nearly 31,000 square feet and took part of the space at the Herndon Centre that was previously home to Kmart. Most of the rest of that space will soon be home to a new LA Fitness.

Sprouts is just a few hundred yards from another natural and organic grocer, MOM’s Organic Market, which also has a footprint in the center. But Sprouts believes it will win customers with its wider array of products and emphasis on fresh produce and other food, said Kalia Pang, spokesperson for Sprouts.
