WASHINGTON – A video introducing the then-newly appointed Ambassador Chris Stevens to the Libyan people has gone viral online after the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi Wednesday.
The video starts with an introduction and ends with Stevens’ hope for a developing Libya.
The ambassador shares his story of growing up in California, working in the Peace Corps and how he found his love of the North African region working as an English teacher in Morocco.
Throughout the video, Stevens can be seen walking the National Mall, surrounded by cherry blossoms and standing in the shadows of the monuments. He talks about his goals of reaching a more democratic Libya.
“I look forward to exploring those possibilties with you as we work together to build a free democratic prosperous Libya. See you soon,” Stevens says as the video ends.
Under the video, Secretary of State Clinton left her remarks after hearing of Ambassador Stevens’ death.
“I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago,” Clinton writes. “He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa which began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco.”
