The Latest: Nebraska men’s hoops vs Penn State postponed

The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world:

Nebraska has announced that its men’s basketball home game against Penn State on Jan. 30 has been postponed.

The Huskers (4-8, 0-5 Big Ten) have now had five games postponed amid the pandemic. Last week, Nebraska said coach Fred Hoiberg and 11 other staffers or players had tested positive for COVID-19. Hoiberg has an underlying health condition. He was born with an abnormal aortic heart valve and had to retire from pro basketball because of it in 2005.

For now, Nebraska’s next scheduled game is Feb. 3 at Michigan State. Options for rescheduling the Penn State game will be discussed with the Big Ten Conference.

The Canadian Olympic committee and Swimming Canada have provisionally nominated six swimmers to the country’s team for the Tokyo Olympics.

Swimming Canada invoked the unexpected circumstances clause of its Olympic team nomination criteria and has postponed its invitation-only Olympic trials from April to May 24-28 in Toronto because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An extra Olympic qualifying event is planned for June 21-23 in Toronto. The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to begin July 23.

The six swimmers nominated to the team are: Kylie Masse, Maggie MacNeil, Penny Oleksiak, Sydney Pickrem, Taylor Ruck and Markus Thormeyer.

They either medaled or were Canada’s highest placing individual finalists in their events at the 2019 world championships.

The provisional nominations are limited to a maximum of one per event, so no event is closed for nomination. At least one spot per event remains available to be contested at trials.

If the trials are unable to be held, Swimming Canada has the right to further apply the unexpected circumstances clause to team selection.

This weekend’s games at Manhattan have been postponed. The schedule has not yet been adjusted.

The New Jersey school said Friday the positive test is from a group that includes players, coaches and staff. It came from the program’s regularly scheduled testing.

Oklahoma State says its home men’s basketball game against Oklahoma, originally scheduled for Jan. 16 in Stillwater, has been reset for Feb. 25.

The game was postponed because of a positive COVID-19 test within the Oklahoma State program, according to Oklahoma State officials.

The teams also are scheduled to meet Feb. 27 in Norman.
