WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man accused of shooting at a police substation has now been charged in connection with the shooting deaths of his mother and grandmother, authorities said Wednesday.
Police believe the slayings occurred prior to Monday’s attack on the Winston-Salem substation in which suspect William Coleman Scott was shot and captured after a chase.
Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson told a news conference that Scott, 26, has been served with a warrant on a murder charge in the death of his grandmother, Glenda Snow Corriher, 84. Police said Corriher’s body was found Monday in her condominium in Winston-Salem.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Scott was charged with murder in the death of his mother, Kimberly Kyle Scott, whose body was found Monday in her home in Clemmons.
Thompson said Scott fired more than a dozen shots at the police substation Monday just before a shift change when more than 50 police employees were inside. Police officers stationed outside saw Scott fire the shots and he led them on a 4-mile (6.5-kilometer) chase that ended at a park, Thompson said.
Scott got out of his car and started firing his rifle at officers before dropping the weapon and running through the park, according to Thompson. Officers chased him, and Scott fired a handgun at the officers, prompting police to fire back and hit Scott, the chief said.
Scott was already being held in the Forsyth County jail on a charge of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, and authorities said he will remain jailed without bond. As of Wednesday, Scott did not have an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
