(NEW YORK) — For a film that reportedly took over a decade to make, Deadpool has certainly paid off. It’s now the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.
The critically acclaimed superhero action-comedy has now earned more than 745 million dollars worldwide, snapping the old mark of 742.1 million raised by 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded.
Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds as the wisecracking mercenary of the same name, opened nationally February 12. Reynolds has said it took 11 years to convince a studio to take a chance on the film, and even then, it was given the relatively small production budget of $58 million. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which so far is a box office smash despite a near-universal critical drubbing, boasts a production budget nearly five times that.
