NEW YORK MESS
Mets acting general manager Zack Scott is due in court two days after he was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated following a fundraiser at team owner Steve Cohen’s house.
Scott was arrested on a DUI charge around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday in suburban White Plains, New York. Police found him asleep at the wheel of his SUV at a traffic light and determined he was intoxicated, White Plains police Capt. James Spencer said. He said Scott refused a breathalyzer test.
The Mets on Wednesday confirmed an ESPN report that Scott was at a fundraiser for the team’s Amazin’ Mets Foundation at Cohen’s house in Connecticut on Monday night, which was also attended by players. Scott left when the event ended around 8:30 or 9 p.m., the team said.
News of the arrest came a day after infielders Francisco Lindor and Javier Báez issued separate apologies after Báez revealed that a thumbs-down celebration used by the team recently was actually a dig at Mets fans who had booed New York players.
The Mets are set to finish a homestand with a game against Miami.
WEBB GEMS
Giants right-hander Logan Webb (8-3, 2.65) seeks his 14th consecutive start allowing two or fewer runs when he faces the NL Central-leading Brewers. Webb is 7-0 during a dominant run, which began after his last loss at Colorado on May 5.
Webb will oppose Milwaukee left-hander Eric Lauer (4-5, 3.61), who has a 2.23 ERA over his past nine games (eight starts).
BOONE OUT
Nationals Vice President Bob Boone informed the club Wednesday he’s resigning rather than comply with the organization’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, a person with knowledge of the situation said.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because nothing was announced by the team.
Boone, 73, has been with Washington since 2004 and moved into his role as VP and senior adviser to general manager Mike Rizzo after the 2015 season. The father of Yankees manager Aaron Boone was assistant GM and vice president of player development from 2006-2013.
COME BACK SOON
The Twins are hoping that right-hander Kenta Maeda’s return from season-ending Tommy John surgery can be hastened after doctors implanted an internal brace to his arm during the operation. It traditionally takes pitchers at least a year to return to game action after the surgery, but Minnesota is hoping Maeda will be back in 9-12 months.
Maeda was the runner-up in the AL Cy Young Award voting last season, when he went 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts. In 21 starts this season, Maeda was 6-5 with a 4.66 ERA
