Police: Off-duty sergeant shot man in Virginia apartment

RESTON, Va. (AP) — Law enforcement authorities say the man who fatally shot another man Friday at an apartment building in Northern Virginia is a police sergeant with Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department.

The sergeant was off duty when the shooting happened, WTTG-TV reported Saturday. The Fairfax County Police Department did not immediately release his name.

The agency in a statement said the sergeant opened his apartment door and found a man, later identified as Daniel Matheson, standing in the doorway. Police said the sergeant reported he fired his weapon when Matheson began to raise a firearm in his direction.

Police said the sergeant fired one round and struck Matheson in the upper body. Authorities said Fairfax County police officers who had responded to the building for a disturbance call around 11:36 p.m. rendered first aid to Matheson.

Matheson, 29, of Reston, later died at a hospital.

Police said detectives believe the men did not know each other. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the police department.

The TV station reported the sergeant was placed on administrative duty.
