Merriweather Post Pavilion tests new ‘sky lawn’ seating 40 feet above the stage

If you’ve been to a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion this summer you may have noticed some changes — including a new seating option that claims to be the first of its kind.

The Columbia amphitheater’s “sky lawn” consists on platforms on both sides of the pavilion raised about 40 feet in the air, each with the ability to hold roughly 500 people. For now, the lawn is in “beta testing,” said Brad Canfield, vice president of operations at the venue. He and his team are working out some of the challenges associated with the seating as well as how they will market them to concertgoers in the future.

For now, Canfield said the venue is not charging people to go up and check out the new lawn, but with a strict capacity, access is first come, first served. That may change in the future but Canfield said for now they are letting people try it out.

“If it becomes a huge success, then we will figure out a way for people to get those seats,” he said.
