Ex-foreign service officer gets prison for girls’ sex abuse

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A Maryland man has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for sexually abusing children to produce child pornography while he was working overseas as a State Department foreign service officer.

U.S. Attorney Robert Hur’s office said in a statement that a federal judge on Tuesday also sentenced 52-year-old Steven Hadley Hassan of Frederick to lifetime supervised release after his prison term. Also, he must register as a sex offender after his release.

Hur’s office says Hassan pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a girl in government housing in the Philippines and South Africa. Federal authorities said Hassan also sexually abused two prepubescent sisters and produced images of the abuse while he was stationed in the Philippines.

Hassan has been detained since his arrest in June 2018.
