From blockbusters to award contenders, what are the year's best movies?
Director: Denis Villeneuve
From the director of “Prisoners” and “Sicario,” “Arrival” is an instant sci-fi classic about a linguist (Amy Adams) and a theoretical physicist (Jeremy Renner) recruited by a military officer (Forest Whitaker) to communicate with 12 alien ships that suddenly appear on Earth. The suspenseful build is masterful, subverting our directional compass (i.e. “2001”) as we enter the chute of the alien ship. At first glance, I was perplexed by the script’s “Solaris”-style reveal. After a second viewing, it not only holds up, it’s even more intricate and cleverly constructed. “Arrival” truly is one of the year’s most thought-provoking films, exploring the circular nature of time, the difference between “tools” and “weapons,” the danger of a trigger-happy society, and whether we might choose to live even if we know the outcome.
