Driver arrested in deadly crash on Columbia Pike

WASHINGTON — One woman was killed and five others were taken to the hospital, including one person with life-threatening injuries, after a three-car crash on Columbia Pike at Fairfield Road in Silver Spring.

The driver of a BMW involved in the crash has been arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Police in Montgomery County said they initially received a call for a minor collision involving a black 2006 Honda Pilot and a silver 2014 Honda Pilot at the intersection of Columbia Pike/U.S. 29 at Fairland Road a little after 3 a.m. on Sunday.

After the crash, the driver, identified as 45-year-old My Huong T. Nguyen of Greenbelt, Maryland, and a man, who was the passenger in the front seat of the black Pilot, got out of their vehicles and were standing near their car when they were hit by a silver 2006 BMW that traveling southbound on Columbia Pike.

Police said Nguyen was pronounced dead on the scene. The man and another woman who was a passenger in the back seat of the black Pilot were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A man who was a passenger in the BMW was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the BMW was identified as 29-year-old Ivan William Kadian of Hyattsville, Maryland. He was arrested at the scene for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was not injured in the crash.

Police said the woman who was driving the silver Honda Pilot and a woman passenger were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Columbia Pike was closed for several hours as police investigated the crash. Their investigation is ongoing.
