New charges for man accused of kidnapping Canadian woman

PICKENS, S.C. (AP) — A man who authorities say lured a woman from Canada to South Carolina, held her captive for days and sexually assaulted her is now facing new charges.

Forty-year-old Fred Russell Urey was initially charged with kidnapping and one count of criminal sexual conduct. Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said the Alberta woman had been promised modelling work and jumped through a window of Urey’s home during a May 2017 rescue.

A spokeswoman for the 13th Judicial Circuit court in Greenville, South Carolina, said the case was sent to a grand jury Tuesday. She says prosecutors filed five new criminal sexual conduct counts for each day Urey is accused of holding the woman.

It’s unclear if Urey has a lawyer who could comment. A trial date has not been set.
