Giant taking over former Shoppers in Alexandria

Giant Food is on the move — into closed or closing Shoppers locations, at least in Greater Washington. 

The latest move confirmed by the Landover grocery chain is that the Giant at 5730 Edsall Road in the Van Dorn Station Shopping Center will close and relocate into the now-closed Shoppers Food & Pharmacy at the Plaza at Landmark located at 6200 Little River Turnpike. 

Shoppers closed this past spring in that center, which also includes Total Wine & More, Marshalls and Dollar Tree. Giant is spending $20 million to renovate the Alexandria location, which is 56,000 square feet. The store will have many of the features Giant is now including in its new formats, including a full-service floral department, a bank option and expanded natural and organic sections. 

The old Giant (which is store No. 242 and was smaller at 44,000 square feet) will close on the same day that the new one opens, which is projected for sometime this winter. Construction on the renovation began in late June.…
