Police to issue warnings, tickets in Prince George’s Co. work zones

WASHINGTON — If you’re prone to treat the Beltway like a speedway, you may want to be a little more careful about how fast you’re going in work zones along northbound and southbound Interstate 95 and I-495 near the bridge over Suitland Road in Prince George’s County.

Maryland State Police and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will deploy the Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system there.

For the first three weeks beginning on Monday, July 17, if drivers are caught speeding 12 or more miles over the posted limit, they’ll get a warning in the mail.

Starting Aug. 7, drivers will get a $40 ticket.

The speed limit in that area is 55 miles per hour.

The goal of these zones is to improve work zone safety. The state said they are effective, reducing speeding by 90 percent where they are in use.
