Redskins’ first-round pick in the NFL Draft is Alabama DE Allen

WASHINGTON —The Redskins filled a position of need with their first-round selection, taking Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen at No. 17.

The Redskins have plenty of holes to fill, but their biggest need is along the defensive line.

Allen played his high school football at Stone Bridge High school in Ashburn, Virginia, before going on to be a star at Alabama.

The Redskins benefit from Allen dropping to 17th, when many thought he was a top 10 pick. He had surgeries on both shoulders during his college career but has been cleared by doctors.

Earlier, the Baltimore Ravens took Alabama cornerback Marlon Humphrey with the 16th overall pick.

The Cleveland Browns, who had the No. 1 overall pick, selected Myles Garrett, a defensive end from Texas A&M.

A few teams gave up picks to move up for a quarterback:

  • The Chicago Bears, who were set to pick at No. 3, gave up four picks to the 49ers to take North Carolina Tar Heel Mitchell Trubisky at No. 2 overall.
  • The Kansas City Chiefs traded three picks to Buffalo to take Texas Tech’s  Patrick Mahomes.
  • The Houston Texans traded a pick to take Clemson’s Deshaun Watson at No. 12 overall.

The 82nd-annual event, being held this year in Philadelphia, is the first time an entire NFL draft is being held outdoors: The player selections are being announced from an outdoor theater built on the famous “Rocky Steps” near the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Rounds 2 and 3 will be held Friday, with rounds 4–7 concluding Saturday.

Washington has nine more picks over the next two days, barring any trades. They will have a pick in the second and third round, with seven total picks in rounds 4–7 on Saturday.

The Redskins’ tentative upcoming picks include:

  • Round 2, 17th pick (49th overall)
  • Round 3, 17th pick (81st overall)
  • Round 4, 7th pick  (114th overall; acquired from the New York Jets)
  • Round 4, 17th pick (123rd overall)
  • Round 5, 10th pick (154th overall; acquired from the New Orleans Saints)
  • Round 6, 17th pick (201st overall)
  • Round 6, 25th pick (209th overall; acquired from the Houston Texans)
  • Round 7, 2nd pick (220th overall; acquired from the San Francisco 49ers via Derek Carrier trade)
  • Round 7, 17th pick (235th overall)
