Va. politicians debate Trump’s ability to lead the U.S.

WASHINGTON — On Wednesday, Virginia Republican consultant Tucker Martin told WTOP that he doesn’t want Donald Trump to be the nation’s next leader.

“I never envisioned myself being opposed to a Republican candidate for president,” Tucker said. “But when I look at somebody like Donald Trump … I don’t think he’s fit to be president of the United States.”

Trump is the last Republican standing in the 2016 presidential race, after Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich suspended their respective campaigns this week. That paves the way for Trump to be the GOP’s presidential nominee.

In response, former Virginia governor and presidential candidate Jim Gilmore also spoke with WTOP, defending Trump’s concern for workers in middle America and across the nation. Gilmore said he understands their anxiety.

“Donald Trump has become a strong voice for working people in this country, for people in Ohio and Michigan and places like that,” Gilmore retorted.

“I think the time has come to get away from this Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama approach to a slow economy, and get the economy going again. And I believe Donald Trump offers the strength to be able to do that.”
