Cyclists to pedal through Prince William County for ‘Tour of the Towns’

WASHINGTON — Bike riders Sunday will enjoy the scenic views of mountains and farm country as they get a taste of the beauty of Prince William County, Virginia for the 3rd annual Tour of the Towns — Tour of Prince William.

“We have a lot of places that are really beautiful to see by bicycle in Prince William County,” said Earnie Porta, who is with Prince William Trials and Streams Coalition. He’s also the founder of the bike ride.

This year’s ride winds through  the western part of the county. “You’ll go through urban, suburban, ex-urban, rural, forested, town, flat, and hilly areas. You see all of them on these rides,” Porta said.

Cyclists can choose from  three routes: a 25-mile ride designed for the casual rider; a 45-mile ride for middle-of-the-road riders; and a 67-mile route for  serious road bike riders, Porta said.

Porta said he  set up  the ride three years ago with Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition because he would have to go outside the county to participate in events like this one.

Porta said Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition, a nonprofit, is working to connect the different trails systems within the county. The annual bike ride is a fundraiser for the organization.
